![]() ![]() The old part is why they did ok for a bit because those are just catalog sales, and CDP used to do all the work getting the games to run on modern hardware or in custom tailored DOSboxes. GOG doesn't compete that way because their original remit was DRM-free (which publishers and devs don't like) re-releases of old PC games. So they spent to try and improve their position. Epic was spending money for exclusives because they were starting about 15 years later to the storefront than Valve was. ![]() The feelings about Epic sure seem like it's fine that Valve did that because it was 20 years ago, so it's fine, but Epic paying for timed exclusives ( a policy they're no longer engaged in, now they are fully funding publishing) is a crime against good tastes.Īnd if they did try to compete that way, it's not unlikely it could open up some anti-trust investigations. EDIT: I'm gonna disagree with myself, Valve bought two of the most popular mods for their games in Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, staffed the teams up a bit, made more maps, and then used Steam to make those previously free experiences PAID and exclusive to their storefront, no more free mod direct2drive manual updates for us, seems like a good thing? hopefully they don't break your favorite weapons in the new update, or remove your favorite maps. ![]() Valve isn't doing that because their market share is so strong they are the default for PC gaming. It's pretty damning, that Epic with all their resources, only could muster a client that at it's best generates comments like "it's fine" or "I don't mind using it". It hasn't changed anything, other then that disruption it had at the beginning with it's timed exclusives. It's basically just another set of credentials and server dependencies to lock your games behind. The prices aren't noticably better then at their competitors for me here in Sweden.Īnd as far as I know, they haven't backed and enabled new and smaller games, that otherwise wouldn't have happened, to any larger extent. It doesn't promote DRM free alternatives more then any others. It has nothing extra that other launchers doesn't have. It lacks basic features like showing installation sizes (if they haven't added it in the past couple of months). There's no selling point for it, it has no edge. I can only judge it from my view as a customer.Īnd from that viewpoint, EGS is still something you have to use, not something you want to use. ![]()
